During my clinical rotation this semester I was able to improve my patient interaction skills. More specifically my ability to have a therapeutic conversation with patients. The most impactful experience I had was a therapeutic conversation with an elderly patient. She had been admitted for falling after being nudged by her horse and was diagnosed with a right intertrochanteric hip fracture. She was excited to have someone to talk with as she had just returned from physical therapy and felt isolated, it was snowing that day and the driving conditions prevented her family from being able to visit. During this interaction I was able to actively practice my ability to have a therapeutic conversation with a patient while being mindful of my nonverbal communication. Throughout the conversation I learned that the patient is a highly motivated woman who was struggling with her immobility since she is a self-made business woman who thrives on her independence and success. I offered her support and actively listened to her life story. During our conversation I learned that she had a wonderful family support system whom she frequently spent time with. She also expressed her willingness to comply with her physical therapy in order for her to return to the normalcy of her life. I enjoyed talking with this patient and was able to navigate the conversation in a therapeutic manner implementing what we have learned in class. She provided me with constructive feedback at the end of our therapeutic conversation saying that she was impressed with how I listened during our conversation. She offered me positive encouragement saying that she believed I would become a successful nurse because of my friendly demeanor and patient attitude.
